How Does This Calculator Work?
The calculator assigns different numerical values to Hebrew letters based on five traditional numbering systems:
- Mispar hechrachi: This is the most common system of traditional Hebrew gematria. It assigns values from 1 to 400 to the letters of the Hebrew alphabet (א = 1, ב = 2, etc.).
- Mispar gadol: Includes higher values (500-900) for the final forms (sofit). For example, final Kaf (ך) equals 500.
- Mispar katan: Reduces all values to single digits by removing zeros. For example, Yud (י) becomes 1 instead of 10, and Kuf (ק) becomes 1 instead of 100.
- Mispar siduri: Assigns values 1 through 22 based on the letter's position in the Hebrew alphabet. For example, the first letter Aleph (א) is 1, second letter Bet (ב) is 2, and so on until the last letter Tav (ת) at 22.
- Mispar bone'eh: Uses the standard mispar hechrachi values but calculates the word value from running totals of letter values. For example, for the word אב (Aleph = 1, Bet = 2), the running totals are 1, then 1+2 = 3. The mispar bone'eh method adds these together, so the word value becomes 1 + 3 = 4.

For example, the Hebrew word חי (chai), meaning "life," has a gematria value of 18, which gives this number special significance in Jewish tradition: it's commonly associated with vitality and blessing.
Example Connections in Hebrew Gematria
Many Hebrew words form interesting patterns when we consider their gematria values.
The word ashir (עשיר), for example, which means "wealthy person", has a standard value of 580, and the word ani (עני), or "poor person", has a standard gematria value of 130. Interestingly, the difference between them, 450, is also the value for the word tein (תן), which means "to give".
Another example is ahavah (אהבה), which means "love", and echad (אחד), meaning "one." Both words have the same gematria value of 13, a pairing traditionally noted as a symbolic link between love and unity.
