What Is the Hebrew Gematria Calculator?

Gematria is a type of Hebrew numerology where letters and words are given numerical values. Originating from ancient times, it is still used today in Jewish traditions.

This Hebrew gematria calculator uses five traditional methods to calculate the numerical values of Hebrew words and phrases. You can enter Hebrew text using your keyboard or by clicking the Hebrew characters provided above. Then, it will calculate the gematria value for your Hebrew text.

How Does This Calculator Work?

Each method assigns different numerical values to Hebrew letters:

  • Mispar hechrachi: The standard system, used most commonly in traditional Hebrew gematria. It assigns standard values from 1 to 400 to Hebrew letters (א = 1, ב = 2, etc.).
  • Mispar gadol: Includes higher values (500-900) for the final forms (sofit). For example, final Kaf (ך) equals 500.
  • Mispar katan: Reduces all values to single digits by removing zeros. For example, Yud (י) becomes 1 instead of 10, and Kuf (ק) becomes 1 instead of 100.
  • Mispar siduri: Assigns values 1 through 22 based on the letter's ordinal value in the Hebrew alphabet. In the ordinal value system, the first letter Aleph (א) is 1, second letter Bet (ב) is 2, and so on until the last letter Tav (ת) at 22.
  • Mispar bone'eh: Uses standard values (mispar hechrachi) but creates a running total, adding each letter's value to all previous values in the word.

Why Use the Hebrew Gematria Calculator?

The word "gematria" possibly comes from the Greek word geometry (or from grammateia) but has become synonymous with Hebrew tradition-related numerology. This ancient practice of assigning numbers to Hebrew letters has been around for centuries and is often used to uncover hidden meanings in Torah texts, names, and phrases.

The standard gematria value system is a traditional way to analyze the Hebrew Bible through numbers. Many scholars have used this gematria system to study Bible codes and find connections between Hebrew words and verses.

This calculator can help you discover hidden relationships between words. For example, the Hebrew term חי (chai), meaning "life", has a gematria value of 18, which has made this number significant in Jewish tradition.

Common Hebrew Alphabet Words in Gematria

Apart from the word "life", there are other unusual words that form interesting patterns using the numerical sequence of gematria.

For instance, the word "ashir" (עשיר), which means "wealthy person", has a value of 580 and the word "ani" (עני), or "poor person", has a standard gematria value of 130. Interestingly, the difference between them, 450, is also the value for the word "tein" (תן), which means "to give".
