What Is Greek isopsephy?

Greek isopsephy is a numerical code system similar to Hebrew gematria. Each Greek letter is assigned a value (for example, alpha = 1, beta = 2, etc.), and these numbers are combined to calculate an isopsephy value for a word, phrase, or passage. Greek gematria users believe that the values show connections between words and phrases that can suggest deeper spiritual meanings.

What Is the Greek Gematria Calculator?

This simple online calculator returns the gematria value of a piece of Greek text based on the isopsephy numbering system shown in the chart.

To use the calculator, just paste a word, name, or phrase into the text box, or click the letters to type. Click Calculate to see the corresponding isopsephy value for your input along with the numbers assigned to each letter.

How Does the Greek Gematria Calculator Work?

The calculator uses the standard Greek isopsephy system of 27 letters (24 classical Greek letters and three letters which are now obsolete but historically used for numbering).

In this system, the first nine letters are numbered sequentially (1, 2, ..., 9), the second nine letters are the same sequence multiplied by ten (10, 20, ..., 90), and the third nine letters are the same multiplied by a hundred (100, 200, ..., 900). The isopsephy value of a word or phrase is the sum of its letter values.

How to calculate a Greek isopsephy value

To find the isopsephy value of a Greek word, phrase, or passage:

  1. Find the isopsephy value of each letter using the numbering system.
  2. Add the values to get the total.

What Is the Difference Between Greek Gematria And Hebrew Gematria?

The main difference is linguistic: Greek gematria (isopsephy) works with the Greek alphabet, while Hebrew gematria works with Hebrew. Both systems assign numerical values to words and phrases and are used to explore their significance, especially when studying classical or esoteric texts.

Greek isopsephy predates Hebrew gematria, and the development of Hebrew gematria was probably influenced by the Greek system. The term "gematria" itself comes from the Greek word geōmetriā, or "geometry".

There are some interesting connections between Hebrew and Greek gematria values. For instance, the Hebrew gematria values of "נרון קסר" (Nero Caesar), which is the Hebrew name of the Roman Emperor Nero, is 666, while "χξϛ", a sequence attributed to the Number of the Beast in Greek, represents the same number in Greek isopsephy.
